Volunteer with Taking Strides Vancouver
Taking Strides’ is looking for passionate people that want to make a difference in our community. Every volunteer will be matched with one child per assigned session, and they will be responsible for adapting the activities every session to make sure that their child benefits most. We also provide a comprehensive overview of the activities happening each day well in advance.
Volunteers will go through an orientation and training session to equip them with necessary information and strategies to succeed as a volunteer. We provide our volunteers with information that the parents give us during registration to give you an idea of how to structure your plan, however every child is unique and the best way to get to know them is by spending time with them.
What's it like to be a volunteer?
Our sessions typically run on Saturdays and Sundays for one hour. Showing up on time, cleaning up equipment at the end of the sessions, and maintaining a positive relationship with parents are other important aspects of being a volunteer which helps in maintaining professionalism, a clean atmosphere, and a comfortable environment for both children and parents.
Volunteering for Taking Strides allows our volunteers to gain valuable, extra-curricular experience that will aid them in future careers and life experiences. Although previous experience working with children with disabilities is not required, we are looking for dedicated individuals looking to gain experience in this area, and previous experience working with children is preferred.
Working with children, particularly with disabilities, can be challenging at times, and will refine skills such as patience and compassion towards helping kids achieve physical literacy and overcome the barriers set by their disabilities.
Once you submit your application, our team will review your application and be in touch with you regarding an interview.

“There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing the impact of your work with Taking Strides. Seeing just one kid finally come out of their shell, one kid finally become brave enough to try - their big smile after is the most wonderful thing in the world."
“I’ve had a great time volunteering and working behind the scenes with Taking Strides. The kiddos and all the student volunteers make it a safe, fun, and welcoming place, and our mission to reduce barriers for kids with disabilities is amazing"
Volunteer Expectations
You must make a commitment to not miss more than 2 sessions per 8 session set or more than 1 session for a 6 session set. Why? Children bond to their volunteer and become comfortable in the environment when they know the person that they will be meeting every week. This not only promotes interaction, but makes them comfortable to try new activities and work with you. You will also learn more about the child in every session, which will help you in adapting your plan for every session.
